In Alberta, agricultural wildfire and building losses can range from $20 million to over $100 million annually, with recent extreme fire years pushing those numbers even higher.

The good news? Modern technology and smarter maintenance can significantly tilt the scales in your favour. Here is a breakdown of the leading causes of farm fires and the "new school" solutions to prevent them.

As the snow melts and the ground begins to thaw, spring marks the busiest time on any farm or ranch. While the focus naturally turns to planting, calving, and equipment maintenance, this is also the most critical window to proactively reduce wildfire risk.

By integrating basic FireSmart principles into your routine spring clean-up, you can transform your property's vulnerability from a liability into a layer of defence. The key is to address the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) around your critical infrastructure, as up to 90% of structures lost to wildfire are ignited by wind-driven embers, not the main flame front.

Keep in mind: the lion's share of spring prep on the farm is managing vegetation.

Focus #1

The Immediate Zone (0 – 1.5 meters)

This is the most critical area. It should be virtually non-combustible to prevent embers from landing and igniting a fire right next to a structure.

Top Five Causes of Agricultural Fires

1. The Invisible Fuel: Dust & Combustibles

Fine dust, cobwebs, and stray fodder are the most common "first fuels" in a farm fire.

  • The Fix: Make "blow-out days" a routine. Use a leaf blower to clear dust from light bulbs, rafters, and motors.
  • The Habit: Use compressed air specifically for grain auger motors and fans. Establish a strict No Smoking policy inside or near barns, with designated metal bins for disposal.

2. The Silent Threat: Electrical Corrosion

Cover all attic, soffit, and foundation vents with 3-mil metal mesh screening to prevent embers from entering barns, shops, or feed storage areas.

3. Hot Works: Grinders & Welders

Sparks from welding or grinding can travel 30+ feet and smolder in bedding or manure gases. In some cases, sparks falling into under-barn manure storage have caused catastrophic explosions.

  • The Protocol: Always clear a 35-foot "fire-free" zone before welding. If working on penning, ensure manure pits are properly ventilated and covered.

4. Summer Risk: Spontaneous Combustion in Hay

If hay is baled at more than 20–25% moisture, internal temperatures can climb. Above 130°F (55°C), a chemical reaction occurs that can lead to internal ignition the moment the stack is exposed to oxygen.

  • The "Celery Test": Bite a few stalks before baling. If they aren't crunchy like celery, they are too wet.
  • The Strategy: Move away from "bank barns" or multi-use structures. Store hay in a separate building from livestock to create a physical fire break.

5. Winter Risk: Block Heaters & Cords

January fires are frequently traced back to degraded block heater cords. While your tractor might last 20 years, the rubber cords inside a hot engine bay will not.

  • The Cord Rule: Only use heavy-duty 12-gauge extension cords. Avoid light-duty 16-gauge "household" cords, which can overheat under the 1,000+ watt draw of a block heater.
  • Smart Storage: Just like hay, avoid storing running machinery or charging tractors inside your main livestock barn.

Managing Vegetation and Fuel

Reducing dry grass and stubble is crucial to prevent a fire from starting on your property or spreading into your yard. Managing vegetation helps protect not only your assets but also your neighbours and livestock.

Areas of Focus

Dry Grass, Grain Fields and Pastureland

Give yourself, your neighbours, your livestock, and the firefighters a chance against wildfire by reducing dry grass and stubble:

  • Cut the grass. Short grass next to structures reduces flammability.
  • Work up grain fields near or next to building sites to create a low-fuel break.
  • If you have hay fields next to the yard, cut them as late in the season as possible to minimize re-growth.
  • Mow a strip next to a building site to act as a fireguard.
  • Allow livestock to graze in the fields next to the yard to keep grass short.
  • Till the outside perimeter of pastureland to create a break.

Ditches and Fencelines

Unmanaged fence lines and ditches often accumulate dry grass, weeds, and brush, which can act as a wick, carrying intense and rapidly spreading fires into your yard.

  • Manage the vegetation along fence lines and ditches.
  • Mow these areas at least once, ideally in the fall, but ensure they are clear of dry fuel in the spring.
  • Herbicide or a weed eater can help to minimize vegetation under wires and between posts.
  • Check your corral lines are free from vegetation.

Feed Storage

Dry bales are a magnet for sparks and embers. Regardless of how you store bales, once they ignite, the fire spreads rapidly and is challenging to control or extinguish.

  • Prevent Spontaneous Combustion: Ensure hay is cured to proper moisture content before storing, as fires can start from radiant heat or spontaneous combustion.
  • Distance is Key: Minimize the spread of fire. Store straw and hay bales a good distance from any structure or other bales.
  • Minimize Loss: Store your winter supply of bales in a couple of different locations to minimize losses in the event of a fire.
  • Clean Up: Clean up all the old hay and straw lying around.

Granaries, Barns and Outbuildings

Apply vegetation management strategies to any structure or area to reduce the threat of wildfire.

  • If you cannot easily get into these areas to mow the grass, livestock can make a good job of cleaning up for you.
  • Don’t forget to manage vegetation in old corrals and unused corners of your yard.
  • Keep areas around dugouts and other water sources free of vegetation. This not only reduces the spread of wildfire, but it also helps provide ready access for firefighters and their equipment.

Hazard Mitigation Through Regular Practice

Fire risk on a working farm or ranch often comes from day-to-day operations. Spring is the time to service and implement safety protocols.

  • Service and Inspect Equipment: Clean all dust, crop residue, and debris from engines, exhausts, and undersides of tractors, combines, and haying equipment.
  • Check Electrical Systems: Have a qualified professional inspect electrical wiring in barns, sheds, and pump houses, particularly in older buildings.
  • Review Flammable Storage: Verify that all fuel tanks are properly vented, clearly marked, and have adequate fuel-free clearance ($10 \text{ meters}$ minimum) around them.
  • Prepare Water Sources: Check that access to ponds, dugouts, cisterns, and pumps is clear and ready for emergency use. Test water pumps and ensure hoses and portable tanks are accessible.
  • Fire Suppression Tools: Locate and verify that all fire extinguishers are fully charged and mounted in easily accessible locations on all major equipment and inside shops/barns.

High-Risk Areas for Moisture Damage

Electrical Panels

High humidity, condensation, and corrosive gases (like ammonia from manure) rapidly corrode wiring and internal components, making them a significant fire hazard.

Well Pumps and Irrigation Systems

Constant exposure to moisture, standing water, and fluctuating water levels quickly deteriorates electrical connections and seals.

Control Panels

Dust, humidity, and wide temperature swings cause internal corrosion inside electrical enclosures, potentially leading to system failure or fire.

Storage Sheds

Poor ventilation and roof or pipe leaks allow water to collect near electrical tools, chargers, or exposed wiring, sharply increasing the risk of short circuits.
